Christmas with the Bratislava Boys’ Choir

December is one of the busiest times of the year for the Bratislava Boys’ Choir. Our singers have a packed programme of opera and ballet performances, a church concert, and traditional Christmas celebrations with audiences at the Slovak National Theatre and the Slovak Philharmonic. Behind every performance lie hours of preparation, but also the joy of making music together and opportunities for the boys to gain new artistic experience.

A New Look for The Nutcracker
Our festive programme begins in late November. On 27 November 2026, we will take part in the premiere of a new production of Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker at the Slovak National Theatre. For our boys, the production will also bring a change in their stage appearance: after years of wearing white capes, they will take on the roles of traditional Slovak carol singers, bringing joy from house to house through song. Almost all of the choir’s sopranos and altos will take turns in the different casts throughout the December performances.

We will also return to the world of fairy tales in Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera Hansel and Gretel, which forms part of the Slovak National Theatre Opera’s repertoire. In this production, our singers portray both poor children and angels watching over Hansel and Gretel. Performing in the theatre calls for more than vocal preparation: it also requires acting skills, concentration, and close collaboration with the other performers.

A St Nicholas’ Day Concert at Calvary
On St Nicholas’ Day, 6 December, we invite our friends and supporters to the Church of Our Lady of the Snows on Bratislava’s Calvary Hill. The entire Bratislava Boys’ Choir will perform in this church concert. In the peaceful atmosphere of the church, the occasion will offer a chance to pause and embrace the season of Advent through music.

The following weekend brings the traditional Christmas in Bratislava concert. We will once again share the stage with distinguished opera singers: soprano Soňa Godarská, mezzo-soprano Ester Pavlů, tenor Peter Berger, and bass-baritone Boris Prýgl. Rastislav Štúr will conduct the concert.

Christmas Concerts at the Reduta for the 31st Time
We will perform alongside the Slovak Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Ewald Danel, with soprano Eva Hornyáková as soloist. The choir is prepared by Magdaléna Rovňáková and Gabriel Rovňák. This will be the 31st time we have continued our tradition of Christmas collaborations with the Slovak Philharmonic. The programme will feature Christmas melodies and carols alongside more demanding works by internationally renowned composers. An open dress rehearsal and five concerts await us. Their sold-out auditoriums are both a great joy and a responsibility. At every performance, we hope to fill the hall with the singing that has become such an integral part of the Reduta’s pre-Christmas atmosphere.

A Shared Effort Behind the Festive Programme
Such a busy December also requires careful coordination of rehearsals and performances. Alongside their performing commitments, the boys keep up with their schoolwork and learn what it means to take responsibility as members of a group. Rotating singers between casts plays an important role: it helps spread the workload while giving more boys the opportunity to gain valuable stage experience.

We thank our singers for their dedication, their parents for their support, and our audiences for their continued encouragement. We look forward to sharing these December occasions with you.
